Doula Services

What is a doula?

As they say, a picture says a thousand words – check out this beautiful clip:

A doula (or birth companion or assistant) is a woman who offers non-medical support and information to parents in pregnancy, childbirth and the post-natal period. ‘Doula’ originates from a Greek word meaning ‘woman’s servant’. Doulas provide physical and emotional support and have a specific role in supporting the mother to ‘mother herself’ so that she in turn, can mother her child.

A doula’s primary and unique role is to encourage, support and empower the birthing woman. Whilst every member of the birthing team play an integral role in assisting the woman to birth her baby, a doula is available to provide continuous companionship and support throughout the labour and birth process.

Doulas often provide further support in the post-natal period – facilitating baby-led attachment immediately post birth, supporting and encouraging the mother to breastfeed (if that is her wish), helping with sleeping, settling, bathing and many other aspects of parenting a newborn.

My role

I believe that birthing a baby is a woman’s rite of passage – and that a woman and her baby’s wellbeing is optimised if the mum is able to birth her baby where, with whom, and how she wishes – fully supported and nurtured along the way.

I draw on my knowledge and experience as both a mother and a doula to provide physical, emotional, practical and advocacy support to a woman and her partner. This in turn, equips them to make informed decisions in a safe and supported environment.

The scope of my practice includes, but is not limited to, information and guidance around pregnancy, birth and parenting, non-medical comfort techniques, massage, counter-pressure, hot and cold packs, positional changes, breathing, visualisations and relaxation, provision of nourishment and hydration, support and suggestions for the partner, taking photos or video, documenting events and recording milestones etc.
